Looking Back & Moving Forward
I’m a little slow to the game when it comes to blogging about what I’ve learned in 2017 and what my goals are for 2018. But it’s still January and I decided that I still wanted to take some time to reflect and to reset for the adventures that are to come this year.
What can I say about 2017 that hasn’t already been said? There were definitely some ups and downs, plenty of heartbreak, and some fabulous lessons learned. There were places traveled, days seized, and friendships started. To say the least, the good definitely outweighed the bad in 2017.
My favorite thing of 2017 was getting to spend the spring semester in New York City! Going to New York had always been on my bucket list and it did not disappoint. I got see Broadway shows – including Anastasia (twice), Aladdin, Phantom of the Opera, and Wicked – shop on Fifth Avenue, go to all of the tourist sites, interview a fashion photographer, visit the Sacred Grove in Palmyra, and eat all of the pizza and bagels and donuts I could!
But if I were to only choose one favorite thing about the trip, there is no hesitation when I say it was the friends that I made. I made some of the most amazing and best friends in the world! If they were the only thing I got from the trip, it would have been more successful than I could have ever imagined. The friends I made are definitely friends that I am going to love and cherish for the rest of my life. And no, you can’t have them because they’re mine!! Haha 😀
While thinking of the past year it’s hard not to think about the things that changed you and the lessons that you learned. This year I really learned a lot about who I am and where I want to go in life. Lessons that I hope I will be able to continue to expand on, as well as continue to use as the new year continues to unfold.
The end of 2017 came with some personal battles that I will continue to battle throughout 2018. And 2018 has already started with some struggles and heartbreak. These trials are not going to be easy to overcome, but I know that I have some great friends and a great family to help me through them. If 2017 taught me anything, it’s how to accept help and reach out to others when I need to be lifted back up on my feet.
When I was thinking about resolutions for 2018 all of the usual ones immediately came to mind – get in shape, read more, save money, travel, etc. But this year I decided that, while I would still love to do those things, I would rather focus more on goals that will help me grow into the person that I hope to one day become. This year I have decided to set some “themed” goals to help push me and encourage me to become a better person and to enjoy the adventures of life a little bit more.
First, “Be Curious”
Second, “Just Say Yes”
Third, “Your Vibe Attracts Your Tribe”
Fourth, “Fake It Until You Make It”
With these goals in mind, I hope 2018 will be a year full of self and world discovery through my curiosity, risks taken and opportunities seized because I was willing to say “yes” more, old and new friendships with adventures and memories to share, and self-love and confidence that no one will be able to tear down or to question.
So here’s to the new year and to doing our best to make the most of each day so that we can all look back and say that we slayed 2018 like pros.
